From jazz to singer/songwriter and beyond.....
After a childhood filled with singing and performing, adulthood found Shea singing all over California - first in Hollywood with her hard alternative rock band, then throwing down some swing jazz vocals with The Little Big Band, then she ultimately emerged as a solo jazz vocalist and bandleader. Shea began recording and playing up in San Francisco, where she recorded her pop/jazz EP called, “Smolder” at Fantasy Studios, with heavyweight producer Michael Rosen at the helm...featuring Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle as well as Bill Ortiz and Karl Perazzo from Carlos Santana's band. Shea then ventured even farther north to Sonoma County where she happened upon a surprisingly juicy jazz scene, with artistic director Jessica Felix at the helm of the Healdsburg Jazz Festival. There, Shea recorded two albums, the first, an introspective collection of jazz-tinged singer/songwriter originals, with some unique covers sprinkled in, titled,“Piece of the Light” - featuring Robben Ford on guitar, Bill Ortiz on trumpet, David Ewell on bass, Alex Aspinall on drums, Gautham Tejas Ganeshan on violin and Noam Lemish on piano. A couple of years later Shea embarked upon a true, straight-ahead jazz project with an all star cast of musicians like George Cables, Billy Hart, Craig Handy, David Weiss and Cecil McBee called, “A Blind Date” (titled because of the immediacy of the recording despite the crew's lack of familiarity with each other.) This recording brought Shea to New York's Iridium, as well as L.A.'s Catalina Jazz Club. Shea is currently in the midst of curating her own collection of original material, editing, producing, and engaging in some boundary-defying, sparkling collaborations.
